See what Oloyede has to say to justify this year's cut-off marks

In the last one year , the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has regularised over 400, 000 admissions for students who had scored below cut-off marks, among various irregularities, the board ’s Registrar , Prof. Ishaq Oloyede , has said .

Oloyede , who made the disclosure in an exclusive interview with Saturday PUNCH in Lagos on Friday, said many universities and other tertiary institutions had engaged in the irregular admission of candidates for 10 years.

The former vice - chancellor of the University of Ilorin also said within his first six weeks of resumption as the JAMB’ s Registrar , at least 100 tertiary institutions had asked the board to regularise the admissions of 17, 160 students, who had similarly not been admitted the proper way .

He said such institutions had been making pronouncements on cut-off marks that they had failed to follow, adding that the recent lowering of cut- off marks for the board ’ s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination from 180 to 120 and 100 would give schools the chance to do the right thing.

He said , “ Within six weeks of my assumption of office, the statistics show that a total of 17, 160 candidates were submitted to JAMB for regularisation .

“ Regularisation is largely required when the persons involved did not obtain ( UTME ) forms at all, did not have the minimum qualification or they took UTME and scored lower than the cut- off mark. And they were admitted . Between last year and now, I have regularised over 400, 000 of those cases for them (such students) to go for the one -year National Youth Service Corps scheme .

“ We have cleared over 400 ,000 of such cases and it had been going on for 10 years. And because we asked them to come forward with these cases, they came forward . They did not score the publicised cut- off marks and they were in the universities , but we did not have their statistics because we were imposing a centralised cut- off mark on them. They ( VCs) will leave you in Abuja with your centralised cut- off mark, admit who they want and graduate them. They have been doing that , but we are saying, ‘ Let us do things properly. ’”

Oloyede said he was surprised upon his appointment as JAMB Registrar that institutions had been conducting such admissions.

He , however , noted that some universities in the country had been strictly following rules , including refusing to admit any candidate who scored below cut- off marks. He said , “ I can give you the statistics of all the universities that have admitted candidates with 120, 130, 140 ( UTME ) scores in the last 10 years. They have come to JAMB to regularise . If they want to challenge me, by the time we bring out evidence, some of them will be ashamed.

“ So, people should use what they find convenient rather to be making pronouncements and doing something else. That is why I said we are being hypocritical. Schools should not make pronouncements that their cut- off is 200 and admit candidates that scored 160 underground . It has been happening .

“ As VC of UNILORIN, I never admitted any candidate that scored anything lower than the cut- off marks but when I got to JAMB, I hated myself . I felt that I had been unfair to people when I saw what others had been doing . I took cut- off marks as sacrosanct. But I discovered that over the years , schools have been admitting candidates with scores lower than the cut- off marks and regularising their admissions. ”

According to Oloyede , educational agencies in the United Kingdom and Australia have also adopted policies similar to the controversial reduction of UTME cut-off marks in Nigeria.

He said , “ People should know what is going on across the world . Some in the UK and Australia are also saying that their universities are lowering standards and my colleagues there are saying it ’s free -for - all to sign up students. ”

ASUU Strike Update: ASUU To Announce Continuation Or Suspension Today.

A crucial National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is going on to decide on offers made by the Federal Government team last week to persuade its striking members to return to work.

Ahead of the NEC meeting, various zones of ASUU had met also to consider the offer as well as inputs from the various branches for presentation to the NEC.

ASUU had embarked on an indefinite strike on August 14, accusing government of failure to redeem the terms of agreement signed in 2009 and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) endorsed by both parties in 2012.

One of the zonal coordinators of ASUU told Saturday Sun: “I must state that the offer from the Federal Government is a far cry from our members’ expectations. Let us see what comes out of this emergency NEC meeting. Many of our members are not happy with the way government is handling our demands. It is up to NEC to take a position on the on-going strike. Our members are prepared for a long strike, but it depends on the government.”

He debunked a claim by the Education Minister that ASUU would call off the strike this week, saying, “we didn’t promise the minister anything. We told the government team that we are going to consult with our members on what government has offered”.

He described the likely outcome of NEC meeting, as 50-50, saying members wanted to see concrete evidence that government was serious about meeting the demands. The minister, Mallam Adamu Adamu, had, admitted that “government has not fulfilled its part of the bargain, even though we are unhappy that ASUU went on this strike without following due process and giving us good notice. We realised that we promised something and we didn’t fulfill it.

No To Boju-boju Examination, Conduct Normal Exam Or Release Us To Go Home” – UNIOSUN Students

Dear Management,
If anyone is not ready to say the truth, I will, a saying says ” if you say the truth, you will die, if you lie, you will die”.Pls I don’t seem to understand this school any longer, why in this world will a school take delight in suffering her students and having them undergo psychological traumatization all in the name of helping them write exams….
This drama is getting out of hand, if we want to strike why can’t we strike for goodness sake And if it’s exam let’s write it. like I said before, the results of this kind of exam is usually shocking and unpalatable.
Or what kind of results do you expect out of exam you wrote hastily all in the name of hiding from Asuu or the one you are told overnight to come and write in the morning. Let’s us use our brain as students and stand our ground against this inhumane and nefarious acts.
The most annoying thing is that, the students representatives we look up to are just there having meeting with the management on how to continue this stupid exam while they also know that such exam will lead to nothing but mass failure or what sense does it make when you don’t want delay and you write exams hastily and you end up having carryovers you cannot clear till Jesus comes.
I as a student of this school say enough is enough of this ” boju boju examination “, we want a normal exam or release us to go home. It is just that they are inconsiderate, because our lecturers were once students and they know how it feels to read for exams and end up not writing it, they know the psychological effect, but they are just after three own selfish interest.
They also know that during exam period students are always out of foodstuffs And money but they just act unconcerned about our welfare. They may think they are helping us not to suffer the consequences of writing exams after strike for but this help has turned to a wicked act. The school shouldn’t have voted strike when they have intention of writing exams, have they forgot the saying that ” you cannot eat your cake and have it “?.
I found no sense in it when we wait to write exam in school and we didn’t eventually write the exam and the students are suffering, I hope my fellow students will join this campaign until it gets to appropriate quarters and with one voice we will say ” NO TO OPPRESSIVE EXAMINATION “….permit me to drop my pen by saying ” it’s not how far but how well ”
Yours in the struggle,
Hungry and angry uniosun student.

WOW!! Premier League Clubs Spend More Than £1.17Bn On Transfers This Season (Full Story)

Premier League clubs have spent a record £1.17bn on players in this summer’s transfer window, according to business analysts Deloitte.
The 20 clubs had spent the sum by the end of Wednesday, beating the previous record of £1.165bn set last summer.
This summer has seen Manchester United pay Everton an initial £75m for striker Romelu Lukaku, while Chelsea paid Real Madrid £70m for Alvaro Morata.
At the same stage last year, clubs had spent £865m.
“The level of transfer expenditure in this summer’s window has been extraordinary,” said Deloitte consultant Chris Stenson.
“But when analysed in the context of record broadcast, commercial and matchday revenues, Premier League clubs are spending within their means.
“We expect further significant expenditure in the next seven days as clubs seek value in the market.
“Last summer, Premier League clubs spent around £300m in the final week of the window, more than they did throughout the entire January 2017 window.”

Why I Can’t Go And Greet Buhari, Even If Invited — Fayose

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, who seems the loudest opposition voice against President Mohammadu Buhari’s government, has said that his agitation and revelation about what had happened to the President while away in London, was responsible for the return of President Buhari on Saturday.
Fayose, who said this on Wednesday, when speaking to leaders of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) at the government office, said he stands by all his claims about the President being in coma on July 6.
He said he had no apology whatsoever for all he has said about the President.
Affirming this in a press release from his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, the governor who reiterated his call for President Buhari’s resignation, said: “If not for our efforts Buhari wouldn’t have returned now. Buhari is sick and tired and even his physical appearance betrayed this and he needs to go home and rest.
“Today, they have cancelled the Federal Executive Council meeting. You cannot hide the truth forever, it will reveal itself someday. You cannot continue to deceive Nigerians.
“Every word that has come out of my mouth before the President’s return, I have no apology for them. President Buhari was indeed in coma and one of those who visited him said his recovery is a miracle, that shows that he was indeed very sick.
“Let Buhari go back to Daura and rest. Don’t send him to early grave. Buhari is not old enough to be my father, my mother is older than Buhari, he cannot be my father, he can only be my uncle. I am close to 60. I stand by all I have said about the President. We are glad he is back, but don’t over flog him.
“I am not a sycophant and I stand to speak for Nigeria. Somebody must be able to speak on behalf of the poor masses. This was how they deceived us during the time of Yar’Adua. I am not a hypocrite and I will never be one. This country deserves a very healthy person. The office of the president is not for a sick man. The president is tired and should be allowed to resign and go and rest,” he said details later.
“I have said it severally and without apologies. Everything I said when the President was away, I stand by them. The president actually went into coma and this was attested to by what one of the governors who visited him when he was abroad said that his recovery was a miracle. When somebody’s recovery is a miracle it simply means something very serious happened to the person.
“Since the President himself cannot disclose his health status and also the extent of his ailment, it apparently shows that there is so much to hide. Not until civil societies and people like us started making noise. You can’t be our president without us knowing what is happening to you.
So, for me, the president went to coma July 6. Today, they can come back and organise rallies and all that; they attested to the fact the President recovered by miracle which we are glad about. We are happy th at he is back But when you look physically look at the President he is physically. You will see that he is emaciated tired and weak.
“You don’t have to be president at all cost, when you are tired. You go home. I don’t want to talk about 2019′ but I want to tell you that Nigeria needs a president that is agile and strong. The job is too much for an individual that does not have what it takes. It is a common saying that health is wealth. Everything is about health. We wish him well and we want him to recover but the President should throw in the towel , resign and go home.
“You see they said he would come back and resume in his office, he resumed in his office , they said rats have taken over his office! A presidential office, rats took over his office!
“Now they said he is working from home, tomorrow, they would say he is coming from bedroom. All these stories are ending up in a make believe. In a country where you have so much to do, I m not going to be a sycophants here. I am going to be on the side of the common man, the President is tired.
I feel for the president like every other elderly persons, or even people who are not elderly. They could be sick. But when it comes to the issue of governing a country. There is so much responsibility to this and we must equally be able to stand up and say if the president does not have what it takes to continue, he should throw in the towel.
Asked if he would oblige if invited to see Buhari, Fayose said: “I cannot go and greet the president if invited and the reason is that such action would be misinterpreted to be something else. So, it is good for me to wish him well from a distant and be able to tell Nigerians the truth.”
Denying that he ever said he would commit suicide should Buhari returns home as being speculated in the social media, he said: ” I can’t commit suicide because of an old man. Such are from miscreants on the social media. Let me tell you expressly, why would I commit suicide? I cannot commit suicide because of my mother. Even if they are burying my mother now, I will cleverly stay away from the grave so that I won’t fall into it.
“I can’t commit suicide because of Buhari. I never said that and will never made such statement. Truth is that the pressure from me and many other Nigerians made the president to return home. They have been treating this matter under the table forgetting that the life of a president is an open book that can be read by everybody and anybody. What I am saying in effect is that it is in the overall interest of everybody that we have a president that is strong enough to do the job,” Fayose insisted

Dangote To Establish A Private University In Abuja, Earmarks N200 Billion

The President and founder of Dangote Foundation, Aliko Dangote, has set aside N200 billion to establish a world-class university in Abuja. Sources learnt that the proposal has since been delivered to the National Universities Commission, NUC.
A former Executive Secretary of the NUC, Julius Okojie, who is the chairman of the technical team for the establishment of the university, said the foundation intends to drive technology and research in stimulating economic growth.
Mr Okojie, who led his team to the current Executive Secretary of the commission, Abubakar Rasheed, said the proposed university is meant to be technology-driven and asked for the cooperation and support of the NUC towards the realisation of the goal.
According to a National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, publication, the team, accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer, CEO of the foundation, Zouera Yousouffou, disclosed that Mr. Dangote’s desire was to float a unique university of technology with all the necessary infrastructure and best faculty members from across the globe.
Mr. Rasheed, who applauded the bold step, promised to offer all the needed assistance for the success of the project.
He, however, advised the team to reconsider its plan of establishing a university of technology to ‘a conventional university running all programmes but with specialty in the area of technology.’
The executive secretary, who underscored the advantages of the conventional university over the special one, said with the countless impacts on society by the business mogul, the project would be a success.
He asked the team to consult widely and look at the universities in Nigeria and abroad with a view to creating a unique university that would be different in terms of quality in all its operations.
In her remarks, Mrs. Yousouffou said the foundation was ready to make the dream a reality with the sum of N200 billion already earmarked for the project.
She said the land was purchased and preliminary measures were in place for the headquarters of the university at the nation’s capital city of Abuja.
Mr. Dangote is a Nigerian mega-entrepreneur cum billionaire, who owns the Dangote Group, which has interests in diverse commodities.
The company with massive business tentacles operates principally in Nigeria but has corporate interests in other African countries.

FACTS you have to know about POST-UTME

Amatareotubo (2006) describes how the federal government of Nigeria introduced the policy of Post-JAMB screening by universities in 2005, through the Minister of Education, Mrs. Chinwe Obaji. This policy made it mandatory for all tertiary institutions to screen candidates after their JAMB results and before giving admission. Candidates with a score of 200 and above would be shortlisted by JAMB and their names and scores sent to their universities of choice which would screen again using aptitude tests, oral interviews, or even another examination. Obaji asserts that some candidates scored 280 and above in JAMB but could not score 20 percent in the post-JAMB examination, believing that those students must have cheated on their JAMB examinations and could not pass the Post-JAMB examination because there was no way to cheat.

Scholars have argued for and against the Post-Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) in Nigerian universities. Sobechi (2008) quotes the Vice-Chancellor of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Professor Fidelis Ogah, as saying that he had refused to bow to pressure to conduct Post-UME tests because most institutions have turned it to a goldmine. Ogah alleged that most Nigerian universities that conduct Post-UME do so primarily to wring money from rich parents, whose children could not be admitted using JAMB results. Ogah stated that he had ignored pressure to conduct the test, pointing out that if he lacked confidence in the credibility of JAMB, he would lack confidence in a post-UME examination as well.

Similarly, during the 33rd and 34th convocation ceremony of the University of Benin, President Musa Yar'Adua of Nigeria, through the Director of Tertiary Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Emmanuel Okon, remarked that the PUME may be cancelled if complaints against its conduct by students, parents, and guardians persist (Aliu 2008).

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the statutory body assigned to conduct admission examinations, and the National Universities Commission (NUC) have been directed to streamline Post-UME screening in order to avoid government intervention and the elimination of Post-UME screening. The (then) JAMB Registrar, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, also lamented that universities have turned the UME screening into a money-making venture, as reported by Badmus and Idoko (2008). The House of Representatives Committee on Education in their oversight visits to educational agencies learned that universities had turned the screening of students seeking admission into a money-making venture. To stem the trend, the Chairman of the Committee, Honourable Farouk Lawan, suggested the need to call a stakeholders' meeting on the issue.

Nigeria Ranks 3rd On Global Internet Crimes Index- NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said that Nigeria currently ranks third globally on internet crimes index.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the commission, Umar Danbatta, Nigeria with 91.6 million of internet users is placed only behind the United Kingdom and the United States.‎
He disclosed this on Tuesday at the ongoing 2017 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Lagos tagged: “African Business: Penetrating through Institution Building”.
He said: “About N127 billion was the estimated loss to cyber crime in Nigeria in 2015; Nigeria ranks third in global internet crimes behind the UK and U.S.
“A critical factor militating against Africa’s economic resurgence is the weakness of its institutions.
“Nigeria ranks 169 out of 199 on the World Bank’s ease of doing business rankings; we are in a middle of a revolution and the rise of what we call the networked society.
“The NCC stipulates the laws of engagement that will make the cyberspace safe and ensure the confidence as well as the safety of the cyberspace,” Danbatta, a panelist, said.
“There are benefits and risks of the use of cyberspace and both have to be properly managed.”

Ronaldo Reacts As Last Appeal Against 5 Match Ban Is Rejected

Real Madrid forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, has described the decision to uphold his five-match ban for pushing a referee in their Supercopa de Espana win against Barcelona as “incomprehensible”.
After being booked for removing his shirt in celebration after scoring, the Portugal captain was shown a second yellow after he nudged referee Ricardo de Burgos, who adjudged him to have dived in the penalty area.
Ronaldo was handed a five-match ban as a result, a decision that was upheld by Spain’s Administrative Court of Sport on Tuesday.
But Ronaldo, who is already reportedly upset about an ongoing tax evastion case regarding his image rights, hit out at the news via social media.
“One more incomprehensible decision. From injustice to injustice, they will never overthrow me,” Ronaldo wrote in Portuguese on Instagram.
“And as always I will come back stronger. Thank you to all who have supported me.”
Ronaldo missed the second leg against Barca at the Bernabeu and their 3-0 win at Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday. He will be also unavailable for Madrid’s upcoming LaLiga matches against Valencia, Levante and Real Sociedad as their title defence continues.

Finally!! Liverpool Star Coutinho Accepts Barcelona Move Won’t Happen

Liverpool playmaker, Philippe Coutinho, is ready to stay at the club, after accepting that a move to Barcelona will not materialize this summer.
The 25-year-old attempted to force through a switch, by submitting a transfer request by email to the Anfield club. It was immediately rejected.
Coutinho is now in an awkward position, where he now needs Liverpool to welcome him back to avoid derailing his World Cup hopes. The midfielder is currently a key part of Tite’s side, who are the second favourites for Russia 2018.
The Independent reports that Coutinho wants to hold clear-the-air talks now, report the Independent, to smooth over relations and help facilitate his path back into the Reds’ first team.
Manager Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, is preparing his side for the second leg of their Champions League play-off against Hoffenheim at Anfield, where they hold a 2-1 lead on aggregate.
